International roaming data passes

Use this page to add international data passes to a customer's account, confirm eligibility, and set expectations before and during travel.

What's included

Customers can choose to purchase data passes for up to 1, 10, or 30 days to use in any of the 215+ countries and destinations. Data passes do not work in countries not included in the 215+ countries (including cruise ships). Customers have two options to select based on their travel needs.

Voice and data passes 

  • Customers get up to 2GB, 5GB, or 15GB of high-speed international data that can also be used as a mobile hotspot.
  • Customers continue to have unlimited calling and data for the remainder of their pass once they exceed their data allotment, but they may experience slower data speeds.
  • Customers can purchase a new pass before the expiration of the first one and have the second pass begin immediately. The original pass and remaining benefits expire when a new pass is activated.
  • Customers receive unlimited calling (including Wi-Fi calling) between the 215+ counties and the U..S. for $0 per minute.
  • Customers are charged the rate per minute for that country if it is not included as one of the 215+ countries

  • Customers must have a plan or feature that includes domestic data in order to add and keep international data passes.  
  • International passes can be used for plans that have Canada & Mexico Included (such as Business Unlimited, Experience, Go5G, Magenta, ONE, ONE Plus, Simple Choice North America, and more), and work in Canada and Mexico.
  • International passes are available for plans that do not have Canada & Mexico Included (such as original Simple Choice or older legacy plans)
  • International passes for Essentials plans can only be used specifically with T-Mobile Essentials plans only.
  • Standalone wearable plans with voice included are eligible for voice and data passes.
  • International roaming must be enabled on customers' accounts to use international data passes.

Destinations

Data passes are not available to use in some destinations and should not be offered if customers plan to travel to any of the following countries. Airline services (while in flight) and cruise ships are also not available.

Costs and SOC details

Add the appropriate SOC below to each line to add a pass to an account. The pass type depends on customers' plans and if they have the Canada & Mexico Included feature included. 

  • No more than two of the same pass or ten international data passes can be active on a line at the same time.
  • The country and destination must be included in the list of 215+ countries and destinations.
  • Stacking of multiple passes does not remove or prevent Extreme Roamer Reduction status on accounts.

Plans with Canada & Mexico Included

Set expectations

Customer support

When adding or confirming an international data pass, ensure the customer understands the following:

  • Pass activation and expiration timelines, including that all times are based on Pacific Time (PT).
  • Usage limits and what happens after the high-speed data allotment is consumed.
  • That text message notifications will be sent with pass details and usage updates, and the customer should check their device messages.
  • Data speeds may vary depending on the roaming partner in the destination country.
  • Standard international data roaming charges apply to background data usage when adding a pass while abroad and for usage in countries not included in the pass.
  • Cruise ship roaming is not included with international data passes.

Data speeds

  • Customers get text message usage notifications at 80% and 100% usage. 
    • Passes are then automatically removed when the term of service is complete.
    • Data speeds go back to normal once the pass bucket is used up.
    • Essentials customers who purchase the Essentials-specific International Pass will continue to have unlimited data at 128 Kbps after using their high-speed data allotment.
  • The actual data speeds available vary by roaming partner.
  • Standard international data roaming charges apply for background data used by devices to add passes while roaming internationally and for usage in countries not covered by the pass.

Data usage

International passes do not override customers included data bucket for their plans. Instead the passes are prioritized over the data bucket. For example: 

  • Customers who buy a 15GB/30 days pass and do not use any of their Canada and Mexico Included high-speed GB bucket will have the 15GB bucket from the pass used first while roaming in Canada/Mexico. They will then use their included GB bucket after the pass is depleted.
  • Customers who deplete their GB bucket and then purchase a pass will have the pass used first and once depleted, they would be throttled (as they've already consumed their bucket).

Activation times for international passes

  • Inform customers about the activation time of their passes and provide them the end time in the time zones in which they will use the passes.
  • Effective time zone for data passes is always based on the Pacific time zone regardless of where customers are when data passes are added.
  • The following can be used to convert times into times for the Pacific time zone:
  • Recommend customers to add the pass through self-service channels. This will make sure that the customer doesn’t lose time due to differences between time zones.

Additional info

  • International roaming passes are not compatible with pay-per-use data or international data roaming add-on features.
  • Customers will lose the rest of their voice allotment while a data pass is in use if the following transactions are completed:
    • BAN to BAN move
    • Change MSISDN
    • Change of Responsibility
    • Change Product or Line Type
  • Cruise ship roaming is not included with international data passes.
